Risan is the oldest settlement in the Boka bay. It was mentioned already in the 3rd century BC as the Illyrian state. According to legend, in Risan, under the onslaught of the Romans, took refuge Illyrian queen Teuta. In Risan are mosaics from the Roman period from the late 2nd and early 3rd century AD In the middle of the mosaic is represented god Hypnos, the only one of this kind on the east coast.
Risan is one of the largest archaeological sites in our country, specially the part across from the hotel Teuta, called Customs.
In Risan is the church of Sv. Peter and Paul, dating from the 18th century. In the near Risan there is the Monastery of Banja, built in the early 18th century, with a rich collection of icons, painting school Risan Dimitrijevic - Rafailović.
Not far from Risan is the place Lipci which is famous for its prehistoric drawings painted on the rock, where they are arranged in a series of performances of deer on the fly, moving from left to right. Deer are arranged in two rows next to them is a painted several geometric motifs. All performances are derived by pasting clay surface rocks. These drawings date from the Iron Age, around 800 BC
