Herceg Novi is a city on the edge of Bay of Kotor. It has the population of 30 864.
It is recognizable by Sensitive Plants (Mimosa pudica) and many steps. The look of the city is a mixture of Roman, Byzantine and oriental style, strengthened by the smell of Mediterranean. Caravans of Turkish invaders once traveled through its hills, they came here for duels, contests and public punishments. Despite all that, city was enjoyed by kings, emperors, brave warriors and was mentioned in many songs of many authors. Just likethe other coastal cities, Herceg Novi has a mild Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers and mild winters. In summer months city has 10.7 sunny hours per day. Sea temperature in Herceg Novi during summer is 21 to 24 degrees and with similar air temperature it makes swimming season last up to 5 months. City has versatile vegetation, especially flowers after which it is called City of flowers. This versatility was helped by sailors, who after returning from distant lands, would bring new plants. Delights of flower garden of Herceg Novi are further expanded by Indian lilac, Arizona cypress, Japanese cedar, Chinese jasmine, agaves, aloes and various palms… Herceg Novi Riviera is 25 km long and includes settlements or tourist spots that have their own charms such as: Meljine, Bijela, Djenovici, Kumbor, Zelenika. Beaches are very neat and are spread from Njivice to Macak cape on the islet Lustica. Herceg Novi Riviera can best be seen form the mountain Orjen. Orjen is located on 1895m elevation. In Herceg Novi there are many nicely organized mountaineering societies, and the track that leads up the Orjen is well marked. Besides walking, Orjen can be visited by Jeep safari. centuries old and was an intermediary for a long time in trade links with neighboring countries. It was founded by king of Bosnia Tvrtko I Kotromanic and its first name was Sveti Stefan (St. Stefan). Fortresses inside the walls of Old City (Spanjola, Citadel, Forte Mare, Kanli tower) with many palaces and churches witness the spirit of the city. The most prominent feature of the Old City in Herceg Novi are steps – skaline, usually wide and tiring for visitors and tourists to walk on. Old city is surrounded by wall that was slowly built for five centuries. Beside fortress Forte Mare and Kanli tower, in the Old City two big squares should be visited, square Herceg Stjepanasa with Church of St. Archangel Michael and square Mica Pavlovica with Church of St. Jerome, and also National library, Art galleries, City archive.
