Lovćen National Park
Lovcen National Park is the inspiration behind the name of Montenegro. The name Crna Gora (“Black Mountain”) was derived from the appearance of Mount Loven, when covered in dense forest, and first appeared in the 1276 charter issued by Stefan Milutin. The National Park stretches from the Boka Bay hinterland to the high peaks of the Lovcen massif. It was established in 1952 to protect significant historical, and cultural, and architectural heritage alongside the precious land.
This was the highest mountain of what was Montenegrin state, while was ruled by Petrovic dynasty. In the times of the battles against the Ottomans this was area where most of Montenegrins fled to. Not only that name of Montenegro originates from the stories related to this mountain, but the fact that the most important ruler of the country is buried here, makes it a symbol of Montenegro as a state. Peter II was the last prince-bishop ruling the country back in mid 19 century.
