Perast

Perast is a historic coastal town situated on the Bay of Kotor and represents the earliest inhabited area in the Boka Bay area. The remains of a Neolithic culture (3500 BC) have been found in the caves of Spila, above the town. Settlements continued throughout Illyrian, Roman, and Early Christian periods, each leaving a unique mark. It was a prosperous seafaring town, while Venetian ruled the town (1482-1684). The Fortress of St. Cross and chain of watchtowers called cardaci contributed to the unique appearance of Perast.
Another notable feature of Perast is proximity to two jewel-shaped islands: St. George, and Our Lady of The Rock. St. George was home to a 12th-century abbey built by the Benedictines and destroyed by the great earthquake of 1667. A simpler church was erected following the disaster. Today, in fact the island is privately owned.

Beside St. George is Our Lady of the Rock, an artificial island with a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. According to legend, the island was made by sinking stones and ships where two fishermen discovered an icon of the Virgin Mary with Child. The icon rests at the altar of the church.

While Perast is the perfect launching point for a visit to Our Lady of the Rock, should also explore the narrow winding streets of Perast, climb the steps of St. Nikola’s bell tower, and enjoy local cuisine along the waterfront.

Perast is must visit while on a trip to Montenegro, and for this reason we have included it in most of our half day trips.
