Zablak

Zabljak lies in the heart of Durmitor National Park, near Montenegro’s highest peak and most beautiful glacial lakes. In fact, it is the highest town in the Balkans. Most notably, Montenegro has been declared the first ecological state in the world and Zabljak was chosen as its capital.

The town is known for rugged mountains and natural wonders, but also offers a fascinating history. Zabljak was originally known as “Varezina voda”, probably because the town was built around a fresh source of drinking water. It was renamed Zabljak in 1870, when many churches, schools, homes, retail stores, and taverns were first erected. Most of these old buildings have disappeared except the Church of St. Transfiguration, built to honor the 1682 victory over the Turks. 

In the period before World War II, this place began attracting nature-lovers from all over the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and abroad. It became a popular ground for hunting, fishing, and mountaineering, particularly amongst Italian tourists. During World War II, Zabljak made many great contributions and sacrifices. The town was burnt to ashes and rebuilt from ground zero. 

Today, Zabljak is the leading winter sports resort in Montenegro and the surrounding region. There is no better place to experience Montenegro’s natural wonders!
