Ulcinj
Ulcinj lies at the southern end of the Montenegrin coastline, therefore on a limestone hill that slants down to the sea. This ancient seaport was founded in 5th century BC, and for this reason it makes it one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast.
Ulcinj is the witness of different periods. Periods of Illyrian, furthermore Roman and Byzantine Rule. It was under Slavic rule by the Middle Ages, joined the Republic of Venice in 1405, and Ottoman Empire in 1571. The Principality of Montenegro gained control of the town in 1878.
The Old Town of place boasts many historic buildings, and points of interest. Be sure to visit the town’s Citadel and the 16th-century Church-Mosque that was converted into the Archaeological Museum of Ulcinj. Many natural treasures lie beyond the Old Town. Don’t miss Ada Bojana Island, and Long Beach, and Lake Šas.
There is a common opinion that Miguel Cervantes was a slave in this town. Legend says that he even wrote his most notable work, while he was in jail in Montenegro. There is a chance that this story might be true if we consider similarity between the name of one of the main characters in the book, and name of the town.
Back in the time Ulcinj was called Dulcinjo, and it is not unlikely that he was in love with a local woman called Dulcinea. Story goes on how he fell in love with local girl, while he was imprisoned. We should not reveal to much…
